Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek are the top seeds at Wimbledon, not the four-time defending champion Novak Djokovic. Djokovic has won Wimbledon in the last four occasions it was held, and seven times overall, but he will not benefit from the ranking increase in 2022 due to the ATP and WTA’s decision to retain all points to protest the All England Club’s ban on athletes from Russia and Belarus because of the invasion of Ukraine. This year’s eligible players include Russia’s Daniil Medvedev as the third seed in the men’s singles and Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka as the second seed in the women’s singles. The singles draw ceremony will take place on Friday evening (AEST), before the matches begin on Monday. Casper Ruud is ranked fourth among the 32 male selections, followed by Stefanos Tsitsipas, Holger Rune, Jannik Sinner, Taylor Fritz, and Frances Tiafoe. Nick Kyrgios, Djokovic’s runner-up at Wimbledon a year ago, is the 31st seed. Two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray is ranked 39th and is not seeded. Swiatek has held the number one spot since April 2022 and has four Grand Slam titles, including the Roland-Garros championship. However, grass remains her weakest surface, never advancing further than the fourth round at Wimbledon. Elena Rybakina, the 2022 women’s champion at the All England Club, is ranked third among the 32 female selections, followed by Jessica Pegula, Caroline Garcia, Ons Jabeur, Coco Gauff, Maria Sakkari, two-time champion Petra Kvitova, and Barbora Krejcikova. From 2002 to 2019, the All England Club based the men’s draw on a formula that took into account results on grass at Wimbledon and elsewhere. But since then, the tournament has only selected based on rankings to determine all selections.
